A key moment of World War II

Eighty years ago, 156,000 allied forces landed along a 50 mile stretch of coastline in Northern France in one of the largest amphibious operations of all time. A major turning point in the war, the commencement of the Battle of Normandy is commonly known as the ‘beginning of the end of World War II’. By August the area was successfully liberated from the grips of the enemy, and by the following spring, six long years of fighting had come to an end and the war was officially declared over.

Marking 80 years since ‘Operation Overlord’

To commemorate the 80th Anniversary of this historic mission, a brand new ‘D-Day’ Gold Proof Sovereign has been officially approved by Buckingham Palace for release. Struck in 22 Carat Gold to the most immaculate Proof finish, this 2024-dated coin boasts a reverse by leading artist and sculptor Sandra Deiana who has designed for The Royal Mint. It features a close-up of an Allied soldier, in uniform, armed with his rifle on one of the five key landing points, the beaches of ‘Utah’, ‘Omaha’, ‘Gold’, ‘Juno’ and ‘Sword,’ while behind him a plume of smoke rises into the sky from a scene of devastation.

On the obverse meanwhile, is an official portrait of King Charles III by renowned engraver Jody Clark. His Majesty’s grandfather, George VI, reigned throughout the Second World War and was well-known for keeping morale up throughout the conflict with his efforts to inspire and comfort, including a now-famous speech he made on D-Day, urging the Allies to ‘win the final victory for the good cause’.

A key commemoration of 2024

Following Germany’s unconditional surrender and the official end of the war in Europe in May 1945, the Battle of Normandy is regarded as a key campaign of the conflict which shaped the course of history but claimed the lives of countless Allied soldiers. A time to honour their heroism and remember the comrades who never returned home, this summer’s landmark commemoration is expected to create a particularly high level of demand for tributes. With just 999 D-Day Sovereigns worldwide however, availability is limited at Harrington & Byrne and a prompt response is strongly advised. Housed and protected in a Presentation Case with a Certificate of Authenticity.
